A masterpiece in every sense of the word, this travel trunk was made for Erza H. Winchester, co-founder of the California saddlery company Maine & Winchester. The company was started in 1849 in San Francisco; they grew to become one of the largest saddle-making companies in California during the 19th century. It is not known if this hand-tooled leather trunk was used personally by Winchester or made as a masterwork display example to showcase the superiority of the firm's exceptional artistic ability. It is documented Winchester would travel to Portsmouth, New Hampshire every year to visit family so he may have used this trunk. The piece is in its original "as-found" condition without restoration.
